How we do it

We Give of Our Time

The Pay It Backward Foundation encourages individuals and organizations to be boundless and bountiful with both their time and their energy, as they look to make a difference in the worlds of the abused and oppressed, the vulnerable and neglected, and those living in poverty.

While people in these groups often require resources and social services to help them move forward, human connection can be the most important component of all in ensuring genuine and true success stories. When you offer your time to people, you’re letting them know they matter. A compassionate ear is a tender and soothing salve. Eventually, vulnerable people can believe they are deserving of help, as they discover a sense of their own worth, and gain dignity.

Would you be surprised if we suggested that volunteering our time may be more beneficial to us than to even those receiving our kindness? When we’re living at breakneck speed, days tend to blur together. Paradoxically though, freeing up some precious time to jump into a new situation, can break up our mundane routines. We gain newfound clarity and a healthier perspective about the important things in life. Studies have shown that regular acts of altruism fight depression and anxiety, promote longevity, improve self-esteem and just plain feels good!

We Give of Our Talents

On the other hand, volunteering is a great way to flex those aspects of our personalities that may sit dormant in everyday life. If you’re a highpowered executive, maybe your happy place is wrangling kids in the event’s babysitting area. A suburban mom might find her groove building benches. Let us know what cause you’re passionate about, and we’ll help direct you to fill a need that’s out there waiting for you. You could surprise yourself!

It takes a myriad of skills (and a village of people) to launch a new initiative, meet an organization’s goals…and change the world!

If we each contribute of our own unique capacities, there’s no stopping us. Here’s the trick to figuring out what your unique and special talent is: What’s that thing people always comment on that comes so naturally to you? Perhaps you’ve got charisma to spare and hosting events comes naturally to you? Maybe making surly teenagers laugh is your sweet spot? Is entering data into spreadsheets your perfect meditation? Then, that’s the skill that will help to make the world a better place!

We Give of Our Treasures

Did you know making a donation affects the brain in the same way that chocolate does? Giving really does make us feel good! But, that’s not the only reason to give of course. Giving is something that is all of our personal responsibilities. Giving makes our societies stronger, healthier, safer, and more vibrant and livable. If we each do even a small part, those who need us the most can experience and enjoy the same benefits and comforts our lands of opportunity afford the rest of us.

There are so many ways to offer our treasures to those in need. With just a wee bit of local research, you will find a cause that truly touches your heart. Reach out and offer a donation. The organization will be genuinely appreciative, and their efforts will continue to see the light of bright new sunny days.

Of course, if you’re uncertain as to where your treasures will be most wisely appropriated and put to use, you could always consider The Pay It Backward Foundation. We have the charitable discernment and experience to apply your monthly, seasonal or yearly contributions to the most wonderful and effective community programs and initiatives.

Once the giving of a portion of your treasures becomes a part of your life, some people set up automatic gifts, which they come to view as a monthly payment, just like electricity and cable. Others remember a past of tithing a 10% portion of personal treasures and feel comfortable in preserving that tradition. The ultimately believes giving is a heart thing, however, not a number thing. But to do one’s part and contribute something, whatever that can be, is the key.

Other ideas? Create a scholarship or a memorial fund in that special someone’s honour. Name the Pay It Backward Foundation as a beneficiary in your will. Collect warm socks and hats instead of presents at your birthday party. Ask your boss to kiss a pig for charity. Squeal! Charity, or giving events can be as innovative and imaginative as you make them.

And think beyond money itself. Your secluded cabin could be the perfect retreat for a non-profit’s annual planning session. Have a suit at the back of your closet that you never wear? Imagine the confidence it will give someone at a job interview. What about all those airline points collecting dust? You could make someone’s dream come true!
